The first official day of fall is here. That’s right. It’s TODAY! Now, it does depend on where you are in the world, but this time signifies change in weather. In the coming days you can expect days of cooler weather to come blowing through. Leaves will reflect autumn with rich colors of red, orange and yellows. The air is crisp and clean.
Let it be known that this is my favorite time of year. Oh yes it is!!! So much so, that my husband and I got married in October so that I could incorporate fall colors into our wedding. Hehe. It is my absolute favorite time….not only because I get to drink my favorite Pumpkin Spice Latte (thank you Starbucks for your early release), but because with the change in weather comes a need to change my life.
I have always found that change can be subtle, like a haircut and fresh color. Or change can be significant, like my fellow military families that are moving and PCS-ing. I find that my favored space is somewhere smack dab in the middle.
I let the change in weather be my cue to change my life, always for the better. Most will wait until January 1 to write out new year’s resolutions and goals. That is always fabulous. But who doesn’t like a couple reminders throughout the year to do a quick “oil change” on your life?
How do I do this? Each fall I ask myself these 3 questions:
- What am I doing in my life that makes me happy?
The first question makes me re-prioritize my life. It’s so easy to get bogged down by the day-in and day-out of daily life. It’s important to reassess what makes you happy. For me, this was easy. Being a mom, wife and daughter make me truly happy. Pursing a career on my own also makes me truly happy. But asking this question allows you to reflect about your life and priorities. Knowing where you heart lies makes it easier to pursue your dreams. So, what are you doing that brings you happiness?
- What am I currently doing to work toward my goals?
The second question is highly important to me. My high school band director used to tell us, “Always be a student of life.” That stuck with me because it ingrained a sense of always growing and learning. You can never master a skill and it should be all of our life’s purpose to seek out knowledge and to continue to grow. This could be in the form of taking some classes (some community college continuing education programs even offer some classes for free). It could be in the form of just starting a journal. It just depends on what your goal is. If you want to start a blog like this one, contact my fabulous friend, Alana Le. So, what are you doing to work toward your goals?
- What could I be doing to improve the lives of others?
The third question seems like it is similar to the first two, but it’s not. This is where I sit down and choose new projects based on my passions. And it doesn’t have to just be volunteering for organizations. It could be sitting down with a family member and having a heart-to-heart talk. It could be clipping comic strips to brighten someone’s day (I do this with my grandma). I go to visit my old neighbor Eunice at the nursing home. Whatever your heart’s desire is…find something to go after. You will feel so good, and so will the recipient of your good will. Start small….but just start somewhere. Need help finding an organization or cause? Check out your local United Way. So, what are you doing to improve the lives of others?
As you start to pull out your scarves and boots, and feel the cool breeze against your face, let it be a reminder that change is good. Change for the better this FALL with me! Who knows what this new season will bring!
Sending you sunshine,
